If you are unsure, feel free to get in touch. The Celtic harp is Ireland's national symbol. It is known as clirseach in Irish, clrsach in Scottish Gaelic, telenn in Breton and telyn in Welsh. The harp was then exhibited and admired all around Europe and England for over 700. Brian Boru was revered by his people for his penchant for the arts and musical instruments. Refer to the course and session descriptions to decide which one would be best for you. The Celtic harp is a triangular frame harp traditional to the Celtic nations of northwest Europe. The actual instrument that inspired the symbol of Ireland and Guinness, known as the Boru/O’Neill harp, was gifted to the Pope by Irish King Brian Boru’s son in 1064. You can sign up for Course 2 or 3 without taking the preceding course/s. This is Course 1 in a sequence of three: Course 2 (spring 2023) and Course 3 (autumn 2023), will build on skills and knowledge introduced in the previous courses. One of the oldest harps dating back to the 14th or 15th century is currently preserved at Trinity College, Dublin. The Irish harp, although not as renowned as the shamrock is the official emblem of Ireland. These harps are easy to play and have a lower string tension than our so-called 'classic' lever harps.

In this first of a series of three progressive courses for 2023, you will acquire the historical playing techniques and repertory fundamental to mastering the instrument. The traditional Irish harp playing techniques, first published in 1840, use the left hand in the treble and the right hand in the bass. This course will teach you the foundational skills and knowledge you need to begin to explore the music and traditions of the early Irish harp.
